Editorial Policy and Methodology

EcoForeman exists to give homeowners numbers they can check. This page explains how calculators and guides are made, where the figures come from and what happens when something is wrong.

Who writes and checks the content

Every calculator and guide is written or edited by M Bilal Naeem, who runs EcoForeman. Guides may be drafted with the help of AI tools, but nothing is published until a person has researched the topic, checked each number against its source and worked the examples through by hand.

How the calculators work

  • Formula shown. Every calculator page has a "How it works" section with the formula, the assumptions behind it and a worked example you can repeat with a pencil.
  • Your numbers first. Defaults are typical figures for the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia. Every default can be replaced with the number on your own bill, label or quote.
  • Tested. The formulas run in your browser and are covered by automated tests, so the worked examples on each page always match what the calculator does.
  • Nothing is stored. The values you type stay in your browser; we do not save them.

Where the numbers come from

We prefer primary and official sources, and say which one each figure comes from:

  • Electricity, gas and fuel prices: the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), Ofgem in the UK, the Canada Energy Regulator and Australian government and industry data.
  • Efficiency and product data: ENERGY STAR, the US Department of Energy, the EPA and manufacturers' published specifications.
  • Solar resource: NREL PVWatts and the European Commission's PVGIS.
  • Incentives and tax credits: the IRS, HMRC, the Clean Energy Regulator and the official programme pages.

Prices, rates and incentives change often. Pages that depend on them show the source and the date the figures were checked, and we review them when a regulator publishes new numbers, such as each Ofgem price cap or EIA outlook.

Products and reviews

We have not lab-tested the products we mention. Comparisons are based on manufacturers' specifications and say so; where listings disagree, we point it out. We do not accept payment to include a product or to change a result.

Advertising and affiliate links

The site is paid for by advertising and, where available, affiliate links. Partner links are labelled, and advertisers and partners have no say over what we publish. A commission never changes a calculator's result. See the disclaimer for details.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, email info@ecoforeman.com or use the contact form with the page and the numbers you used. We check every report, fix confirmed errors as quickly as we can and note significant corrections on the page.
